Whether you’re on the ground in Baku or joining virtually, navigating the huge number of events at COP29 is no small task. This list outlines key sessions for investors to keep an eye on, including discussions where IIGCC experts will be speaking or attending.

The 29th Conference of Parties (COP29) will take place between 11 and 22 November.

Ahead of the conference, our CEO, Stephanie Pfeifer, called for recognition of the private sector in unlocking climate finance for the New Collective Quantified Goal. Our COP29 Hub outlines exactly who’s on the ground from IIGCC and what our objectives are at the conference.

Wednesday, 13 November

Climate Action Sustainable Innovation Zone 2024

As part of a larger two-day conference, the Climate Action Sustainable Innovation Zone will facilitate cross-sector collaboration, partnerships, capacity building and problem-solving for various stakeholders – including solution providers, investors, governments, cities and change makers. The event will take place at Baku Marriott Hotel Boulevard.

Making Progress on Nature Finance: From Cali to Belem

This high-level roundtable event on nature and climate will bring together leaders from governments, financial institutions and Indigenous communities to discuss actions to increase ambition on nature finance from CBD COP16 towards COP30 and beyond.

This official Blue Zone event will take place in the Mugham room between 13:00-14:30, organised by the High Level Climate Champions and supported by IIGCC.

Equitable net zero future: Delivering for the real economy

This International Standards Organisation (ISO) panel discussion will explore how standards empower businesses, financial institutions and policymakers to drive bold, meaningful climate action.

Held from 17:15-19:00 at Standards Pavillion in the Blue Zone, Valentina Ramirez, IIGCC’s Head of Climate Strategy Implementation will be speaking on the panel. Virtual joining links should be available closer to the date.

Exponential Race to the Top: Actions, Finance, Policy

This session approaches emissions reductions from the perspective of opportunities and competitiveness. Held from 16:00-16:45 in the ‘We Don’t Have Time Climate Hub’ in the Blue Zone and virtually, the event will discuss policy approaches that governments can take to excel in several areas, including clean energy, transportation and land and food.

Thursday, 14 November

Finance action towards 2030 — Catalysing investment towards ambitious national climate action plans

This event will spotlight and strengthen the impactful collaboration between public and private actors needed to deliver climate finance at scale for ambitious climate action plans, particularly in developing countries. Convened by the COP29 Presidency and UN Climate Change High-level Champion, Nigar Arpadarai, visit the COP29 Business, Investment, and Philanthropy Climate Platform between 9:00-10:00 in Plenary 2, Caspian (Blue Zone).

IIGCC is co-organising this event, and Arianna Griffa, IIGCC Senior Policy Manager - Global, will be speaking.

Time for Action: Unlocking financial flows to triple renewables by 2030 in Emerging Markets and Developing Economies

Organised by Global Renewables Alliance and Global Solar Council, join from 9:00 to 10:15 to hear how emerging markets and developing economies can navigate the energy transition and their profound impact on global climate goals.

Financing the transition of the real estate sector towards net-zero: A banking perspective

This event – organised by GlobalABC in collaboration with UNEP Cool Coalition – examines how the transition of the real estate sector towards net-zero will be financed. Hosted in the Blue Zone at COP 29 Buildings and Cooling Pavilion between 12:30 and 14:00.

Investing in innovative solutions for decarbonising the built environment

This session aims to provide actionable financing strategies to support and accelerate the adoption of innovative solutions for decarbonisation and resilience in the buildings and construction sector. Hosted at the COP29 Buildings and Cooling Pavilion between 14:30-15:50.

The session will be led by IIGCC, and Hugh Garnett, our Senior Investor Strategies Programme Manager - Real Assets, will be speaking.

Fair Share, Equity, and Justice for Non-State and Subnational Actors

This event will highlight different perspectives on promoting equity and justice in net-zero commitments, addressing challenges, best practices, and the needs of non-state actors within the Race to Zero framework.

Organised by Race to Zero and its Expert Peer Review Group (EPRG), the event will take place from 15:30-17:00 in the private office of the Global Methane Hub in the Blue Zone. IIGCC delegates will be in attendance.

iLab Finance: The role of the insurance industry in unlocking capital

This UN iLab will discuss and outline a plan to deliver an Enabling Insurance Breakthrough (EIB), aimed at mobilising the insurance sector, industry, and finance to drive the shift needed to de-risk and accelerate the implementation of 2030 Climate Solutions.

This event will be held in the Special Event Room – Mugham in the Blue Zone between 16:00-17:30. IIGCC delegates will be in attendance.

Friday, 15 November

De-risking private climate finance to accelerate climate action

The discussion will be held by Danish Industry (DI) in the Denmark Pavilion between 11:15-12:00. IIGCC’s Valentina Ramirez, Head of Climate Strategy Implementation, will be speaking at this event.

Driving Innovative Approaches to Incentivise Climate Resilience Investment

The event will explore how different methodologies can offer a solution to quantify systems benefits, build real-world resilience, and improve the case for investing in resilience. The event will be held between 14:30-15:30 in The Resilience Hub.

Enhance ambition for energy policy: The power of policy to speed a just transition from fossil fuels

This Marrakesh Partnership Implementation Lab will take place in the Hirkan, Zone B, between 16:30-18:00. We co-organised the event and Hugh Garnett, our Senior Investor Strategies Programme Manager - Real Assets, will be speaking.

Accelerating Global Investor Climate Action to Achieve the Paris Agreement’s Goals

The Investor Agenda is hosting an event to discuss policies needed to scale up the finance required to deliver on the nationally determined contributions (NDCs) and implement the global stocktake (GST) outcomes. The event will take place between 18:30-20:00 in the COP29 Blue Zone and virtually.

Pulled finance: Pulling innovations into emerging markets at scale
Organised by KPMG, this panel discussion will focus on how pull finance can act as an enabler for ‘pulling’ new climate solutions to market.

This event, co-led by IIGCC as part of BuildingToCOP aims to explore and showcase emerging, practical risk assessment approaches that define and measure resilience in the built environment. It will be held in The Resilience Hub between 12:00-13:00.

Buildings climate momentum: Buildings breakthrough milestones,Declaration de Chaillot’s ICBC, and the Road to COP30
Following the launch of the Buildings Breakthrough at COP28 and its initial priority actions at the Buildings and Climate Global Forum in Paris in March 2024, this event will showcase the latest progress and critical objectives for COP29. The event will be held in COP29 Buildings and Cooling Pavilion, Blue Zone, between 14:30-16:30.
