30.11.22
  • Ian Simm, Jelle van der Giessen and Udo Riese all re-elected to IIGCC’s board.
  • IIGCC adds 63 new members in 2022, with total membership now over 390.
  • Key developments from the last 12 months include development of the Climate Resilience Investment Framework, launch of the Net Zero Stewardship Toolkit and the most ambitious Global Investment Statement to date.

The Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change (IIGCC) is pleased to announce the reappointment of three members to its board following its 2022 Annual General Meeting (AGM). The three re-elected members are Ian Simm (Founder and Chief Executive, IMPAX Asset Management) as Treasurer, and Jelle van der Giessen (Chief Investment Officer, NN Group) and Udo Riese (Head of Sustainable Investing, Allianz Investment Management) as Directors.

The board, comprised of asset owner and asset manager representatives with a diverse range of expertise and skills, will provide continuity and continued support to IIGCC.

Highlights from the last 12 months

The AGM saw IIGCC’s Chair, Faith Ward, and CEO, Stephanie Pfeifer, recapping the key activities from the last 12 months as part of IIGCC’s mission to support investor progress towards a net zero and climate resilient future.

Highlights from across IIGCC’s three programme areas include: the development of the Climate Resilience Investment Framework, the addition of new asset classes to the Net Zero Investment Framework, the scaling up of net zero commitments through the Net Zero Asset Managers initiative and the Paris Aligned Asset Owners, the launch of the Net Zero Stewardship Toolkit, a new framework to assess banks, the launch of the most ambitious Global Investor Statement to date at COP27, and continued engagement with the UK government and EU to help shape sustainable finance and climate policy.

The IIGCC 2022 Annual Report provides further details on key achievements from the year.

Faith Ward, Chair, IIGCC, said: “It is my second year as Chair and I could not be prouder to have overseen yet more great work undertaken by IIGCC. Importantly, IIGCC has enabled us all to move beyond net zero commitments to the real work of implementation – this has been a clear strategic priority across all three IIGCC programmes.”

“The sheer volume of output this year has been astounding. But it is not just the amount, but the quality and usefulness to us as investors that truly stands out.”

“2022 has presented some significant and ongoing challenges, most notably Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the complexities posed by the energy trilemma of security, sustainability and affordability. At the same time, we have seen a range of irregular and extreme weather events across the globe, once again demonstrating the destructive impact of climate change. Both instances show that IIGCC’s work has never been more important.”

“I am delighted with the board reappointments as all three bring valuable skills and expertise. Lastly, I’d like to congratulate Stephanie and the entire IIGCC team on a successful year and along with the rest of the board, I look forward to seeing IIGCC build on this in 2023.”

Stephanie Pfeifer, CEO, IIGCC: “IIGCC continues to go from strength to strength, as shown by our increased membership base and the further strengthening of our growing team.”

“While there has been excellent progress across all programmes and initiatives over the last year, we are even more ambitious for the year ahead. Specifically, our vision for 2023 includes continuing to develop our work on adaptation and resilience and scaling up our nature and biodiversity expertise. We will also continue to build upon existing activities, including supporting the net zero initiatives by further developing investment frameworks, and the launch of an expanded corporate engagement platform to increase the range and scope of companies covered.”

“Overall, the IIGCC team and I look forward to continuing to work with investors, companies and policymakers to address the challenges and opportunities we face globally in moving towards a net zero and climate resilient future.”
