Welcome back to the second of our COP28 event guides. Finance Day may have passed but as one of four core cross-cutting themes it will continue to feature across the remainder of the event.

5 December: Energy and Industry, The Just Transition, Indigenous Peoples

10:00 – 12:00 UNFCCC: Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action – Taking stock of climate action on industry and energy: Accelerating systems transformation, Blue Zone Action Area, Al Hur
This event will discuss the UAE Presidency’s aims to triple renewable energy capacity and double energy efficiency by 2030, exploring levers for change in the energy and industry sectors. Corporate Executives Nicola Davidson, VP of Sustainability at ArcelorMittal, and Ms Rabab Raafat Boulos, Chief Infrastructure Officer at Maersk, join Mr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, Minister of Electricity for South Africa, in one panel.
Representation from the investment community includes Annika Brower, Analyst at NinetyOne, and Chris Dodwell, Head of Policy and Advocacy at Impax Asset Management.
15:00 – 16:30 Investor Agenda: COP28 side event, Room 2 Blue Zone
This event focuses on the policies and frameworks needed for investors to drive a just transition to a net zero economy. Investors are setting net zero targets, laying out Investor Climate Action Plans (ICAPs) and engaging with companies and governments.

6 December: Multilevel Action, Urbanization and the Built Environment/Transport
09:30 – 12:00 UNFCCC: BuildingtoCOP Ministerial: Buildings Breakthrough Lab, Al-Ghafat Plenary, Blue Zone
IIGCC is a member of the BuildingtoCOP coalition which hosts this ministerial to discuss the Buildings Breakthrough being led by France and Morocco. Its mission is that “near zero emissions and resilient buildings are the new normal by 2030”, with 15 countries including Austria, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK signed on to support so far.

15:00 – 16:00 UNFCCC Marrakech Partnership for Climate Action: Delivering the buildings breakthrough: Pioneering leadership for a low carbon and resilient world, Implementation Lab, Al Shaheen, Blue Zone
Hugh then leads this implementation lab exploring how to achieve two outcomes agreed at COP27 from the Sharm El-Sheikh Adaptation Agenda (SAA) and Built Environment 2030 Breakthrough. The goals include improving home designs for 1 billion people and reducing embodied carbon by 2030.
Hosted with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, this lab promises a host of speakers from the public and private sectors.
16:55 – 17:25 Climate Action Forum: Harnessing the power of the UK’s financial sector, Madinat Jumeirah Conference Centre
Stephanie Pfeifer, IIGCC CEO, joins this panel alongside Sebastian Cross, Co-founder and Chief Innovation Officer at BeZero Carbon, and Anthony Hobley, Chair of the Climate Action Advisory Board, to discuss how the UK can maintain its climate leadership position.

7 December – Official Rest Day
14:30 – 15:30 Milken Institute MEA Summit, Climate resilient infrastructure: Investing in adaptation and mitigation, Rosewood Hotel, Al Maryah Island, Abu Dhabi
Mahesh Roy, IIGCC Investor Strategies Programme Director, joins this invite-only discussion on the risks facing infrastructure from extreme weather, exploring how best to rebalance investment strategies to minimise losses and maximise outcomes, hosted by the California-based Milken Institute.
Other speakers include Christopher Marks, MD and Head of Growth Markets for Japanese MUFG Bank, and Heikie Schmitz, Partner and Co-Chair of the Insurance Development Forum Infrastructure Taskforce.
8 December: Youth, Children, Education and Skills Day
09:15 – 10:00 World Climate Summit ‘The Investment COP’ Financing the green transition: Accelerating climate investments across sectors by 2030, Conrad Hotel Dubai
In this opening session, Stephanie Pfeifer joins Veronika Bienert, CEO of Siemens Financial Services, Kieron Boyle, CEO of the Impact Investing Institute, and Brian Cahill, MD and Head of ESG at Moody’s Investor Services, to discuss how to accelerate climate investments by 2030.
The World Climate Summit takes place on 7 and 8 December and is another popular COP side event, offering a forum for business and investment-driven solutions to climate change.

13:00 – 14:00 FoodTank – Transition pathways for finance for food systems to align with climate goals, Natural Capital Solutions Pavilion
Mahesh Roy joins this panel alongside Jeremey Coller, Founder of the FAIRR initiative, which focuses on ESG risks within the global food sector, Zitouni Ould-Ddada, Deputy Director of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, and Ambassador Ertharin Cousin, CEO of Food Systems for the Future.

9 December: Nature, Land Use and Oceans Day
10:15 – 11:30 EU side event: Scaling up nature-based solutions for climate, nature and people, EU portal and stage
Investors connected to Nature Action 100 may benefit from this EU side event, focused on raising awareness about the increasing number of nature-based solution initiatives. It also aims to identify instruments for scaling up and increasing investment in their design and implementation.

10 December: Food, Agriculture and Water Day
11:15 – 12:45 IPCC Food Agriculture and water: Insights from AR6 and knowledge gaps for AR7, Opportunity Petal, Thematic Arena 3, Ground Floor, TA3-115
The IPCC stage promises a raft of expert speakers and panellists streamed live and co-hosted with the World Meteorological Organization and the MERI Foundation, which promotes scientific research for the conservation of unique and strategic ecosystems in Northern Patagonia.

11 December: Final negotiations
Across 10 and 11 December negotiators will work to an agreement. The outcomes of the “investment COP” are unclear, but what is clear is the enormous impact they could have on the planet. So too, are the dangers of inaction.
Investors will watch closely, hopeful that the conference stimulates a policy environment which enables them to deliver on their net zero commitments.
