COP27: The World Leaders Summit and Finance Day
03.11.22

The climate ‘conference of implementation’ is almost here, and whether you’re watching virtually or travelling to Egypt, this year’s COP has a huge array of events to consider.

IIGCC’s delegation will join the finance community in demonstrating how much progress has been made, and how much more can be done with ambitious policies from world leaders.

Recently we looked at the themes driving discussion at this year’s conference, but with more than 30,000 people registered to attend, planning which events to visit and when is no small task.

To help, we’ve mapped out some important moments to look out for as well as those with IIGCC speakers or affiliation. Specific events are underlined and the ‘look out for‘ sentences highlight agendas that may be of interest.

Please note that all events are Eastern European Time (+2) in line with the local time zone.

This article covers the first three days including Finance Day. Don’t forget to read part two for more ways to join from 10 to 17 November.

7-8 November: World Leaders Summit and Plenary Sessions

The most anticipated part of the conference for many, heads of state and government are expected to unveil major climate commitments as they enter negotiations. The first day focuses on climate finance while the second focuses on the outcomes of major climate reports, such as those from the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

From Ambition to Action: Mobilising Finance for Climate Solutions, Adaptation and Resilience: Partnership implementation lab, Lotus Room, Blue Zone, 12:00-14:00

Last year’s Marrakech Partnership Finance Day had the highest recorded attendance and this year looks set to be even more engaging.

‘From ambition to action’ seeks to hold an honest dialogue on the successes and barriers to implementation, key information on net zero disclosures, transition planning, and meaningful pledges. Plus, there’s a deep dive into the interrelationship between data and accountability.

Stephanie Pfeifer joins a panel at 12:25 to discuss ‘delivering on net zero’ alongside Hendrik du Toit, CEO and Founder of Ninety One Asset Managers and Jessica Lopez Saffie, General Executive Manager of Banco Estado de Chile (NZBA).

Local voices from emerging markets and developing nations will feature highly; expect to hear from guest speakers including Dr Mahmoud Mohieldin, the UN climate change high level champion for Egypt, the Minister of Economy and Finance from the Government of Uruguay, as well as representatives from the Government of Barbados and the African Export-Import Bank.

The aim is to mobilise $140 to $300bn of investment that will be needed across both public and private sources. IIGCC will join speakers from the coalition for climate resilient investment, as well as fintech start-up YAPU and social impact investors GAWA Capital. Live via the UNFCCC YouTube.
