The Net Zero Investment Framework, NZIF, was first released in 2021 and is now the most widely used guidance by investors who have set a voluntary net zero commitment. Adam Gillet and I sat down with Asset TV to discuss how it's used by investors and what's changed in NZIF 2.0.
it was a pleasure to share the platform with Adam, Climate Lead at Railpen, who explained how NZIF and IIGCC membership has helped them address the climate-related challenges they face today and on the horizon.
Investors use NZIF to help them develop individual net zero strategies and transition plans. The guidance is structured under three areas which reflect the main levers of influence available to investors:
- asset level alignment and targets,
- stakeholder and market engagement, and;
- Policy advocacy.
Each element supports a unifying goal – to support real economy emissions reductions. Alongside this, NZIF offers guidance to help investors looking to increase investments in the range of climate solutions that can help to enable the transition.
It’s important to say that NZIF is purposefully a guide, not a prescriptive protocol or a transition plan standard. This acknowledges that investors will implement NZIF differently according to their own unique circumstances and strategies.
Supporting investor commitments
All 56 asset owners who have set a net zero commitment under the Paris Aligned Asset Owners initiative use the guidance. On the asset manager side, 179 asset managers who have set a commitment under the Net Zero Asset Managers initiative use the framework today or a component of it.
IIGCC co-launched and convenes these net zero commitment initiatives alongside our network partners, which helps to ensure our guidance is as relevant as possible to investor needs.
The Net Zero Investment Framework is a publicly available resource, open to all, but it’s made possible by the crucial role our members play in informing our work at IIGCC.
IIGCC members get first access to all of our work, including personalised support on the Net Zero Investment Framework and commitment initiatives. If you'd like to know more, get in touch today to explore IIGCC membership.
