Brazil signals intention to host COP30 on Biodiversity Day
Returning President-elect, Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva has said he will ask the United Nations to host COP30 in 2025, as he promised a return to the world stage for Brazil.
Widely reported in media including The BBC, this follows his headline manifesto commitment to combat illegal deforestation in the Amazon and the devastating impact it has on local communities. Indigenous people from the region have been a visible and vocal presence at COP27.
G20 leaders reiterate commitment to 1.5 degrees in Bali
A joint statement from the leaders of the world’s biggest economies reaffirms the climate and nature commitments made at last year’s COP26 in Glasgow, reports the Australian Associated Press.
An EU official at the G20 Summit agreed that this wording could increase the chances that negotiations in Egypt would cement 1.5 degrees, but cautioned that “there are nearly 200 countries, and it’s only safe when 1.5 is anchored in the cover decision.”
UK Government commits £30 million seed funding to Big Nature Impact Fund
The public-private nature fund is designed to stimulate private investment in nature projects such as new tree planting or restoring peatlands, the UK government press office announced. It also pledged a further £12 million to the Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance and an additional £6 million to support the capacity building of nature and nature-based solutions in developing countries.
Speaking at COP27, UK Environment Secretary Thérèse Coffey said: “Over half of the world’s GDP reliant on nature, which is why the United Kingdom put nature at the heart of our COP26 Presidency and led calls to protect 30 per cent of land and ocean by 2030.”
