Net Zero Investment Framework: Implementation Guidance for Objectives and Targets

Written by IIGCC | Jan 21, 2025 3:38:58 PM

The complete and updated version of the Net Zero Investment Framework (NZIF) Implementation Guidance. This easy-navigate guidance provides a comprehensive roadmap for setting portfolio-level objectives and asset-level targets to support net zero strategies and transition plans.

NZIF is the most widely implemented guidance by investors to set targets and produce related net zero strategies and transition plans, including signatories of the Paris Aligned Asset Owners and Net Zero Asset Managers initiatives.

To support investors, this supplementary guidance provides detailed recommendations when considering two key sections of the framework: objectives and targets.

The document also offers guidance on a range of asset classes across the four recommended objectives and targets:

  1. Portfolio Decarbonisation Reference Objective (portfolio level)
  2. Allocation to Climate Solutions Objective (portfolio level)
  3. Asset Alignment Target (asset level)
  4. Engagement Target (asset level)

Access the guidance by downloading it below or visiting our implementation guidance website. Both the document and the website are easy to navigate, with hyperlinked sections for quick reference, anytime.

This guidance is an updated version of the first NZIF Target Setting Guidance, published in 2021. Key updates include:

  • Repositioning of objectives and targets
  • Recommendations for attribution analysis and rebaselining
  • Clarifications on the integration of scope 3 emissions into objectives and targets
  • A five-step approach for asset alignment targets, including details on how to achieve the target using investors’ levers of influence
  • An alignment dataset mapping, available in a separate document here
