European Commission consultation on the revision of the Energy Taxation Directive
The EU’s Energy Taxation Directive sets out EU rules for the taxation of energy products used as motor fuels or heating fuels as well as electricity. However, since its adoption in 2003, energy markets and technologies have significantly developed, as well as the EU’s energy and climate commitments (including the Paris Agreement). The Commission has therefore concluded that the current taxation rules do not contribute to the new EU regulatory framework and policy objectives in the area of climate and energy; and hence require revision.
To inform the revision of the ETD, the European Commission invited stakeholder views via consultation, ahead of a legislative proposal expected for June 2021. The revision of the ETD is a key part of delivering on the EU’s objective of net zero emissions by 2050. See more info on the consultation process here.
It was submitted to the European Commission on behalf of IIGCC on 14 October 2020.
