About the IIGCC

The Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change (IIGCC) is a forum for collaboration between pension funds and other institutional investors on issues related to climate change.

IIGCC seeks to:

  • Promote better understanding of the implications of climate change amongst our members and other institutional investors.

  • Encourage companies and markets in which IIGCC members invest to address any material risks and opportunities to their businesses associated with climate change and a shift to a lower carbon economy.

A full list of members and details of our structure, steering committee and secretariat is provided in the membership section.

Why the Group was formed

Climate change is arguably the biggest environmental risk management challenge facing many of the corporations in which we invest. It is already affecting government and fiscal policy and consumer behaviour. So as investors we need to understand the investment implications of this if we are to maintain professional standards of investment management.

View Report

IIGCC recognises the growing scientific and political consensus that emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases are contributing to climate change. IIGCC further recognises that companies and markets face significant risks and opportunities associated with climate change, either indirectly through changes in the regulatory environment or directly through changes in the physical environment.

IIGCC believes that institutional investors and companies will benefit from a greater understanding of these risks and opportunities presented by climate change. Specifically, we believe that if companies are more aware of the impacts of climate change, this could lead to an increase in the long-term value of our investments.

IIGCC members are aware that as responsible owners, who may have commitments to good practice standards of corporate governance and socially responsible investment, we can play a part in encouraging a proactive response to what is one of the most significant environmental threats to investors, business, and society.

Positioning

IIGCC seeks to occupy the overlap between "interested investor" (aware of the implications of climate change) and "responsible investor" (acting to manage the risks climate change poses our investments). IIGCC does not seek to become a "campaigning investor" (advocating immediate or otherwise radical changes in energy and economic activity). The following diagram illustrates IIGCC·s position.
